The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial item description in preference to Interim Federal Specification WW-S-00191 which has been canceled.
This description covers water closet seats of the following types for industrial (Ind.) and residential (Res.) use:

Salient characteristics:
Thickness. Minimum thickness of seats shall be measured along a line at the arm at the widest part of the seat between the front and the centerline of rotation in the back. Thickness shall be determined by measuring at the cross-section midpoint and thickness point, and average. Thickness shall not be less than 5/8 inch. The minimum thickness of covers at or near the geometric center shall not be less than 1/4 inch. Thickness shall be defined as the solid mass measured between two planes.
Material.
Seat and seat covers. Solid plastic.
Hinges. Straight or offset; shall be free rotation type, check type, or self-sustaining type, as specified. Hinges for industrial seats must be metal or stainless steel and are to be either chrome plated or plastic covered. Hinges for residential seats must be plastic, metal, or stainless steel, and are to be either chrome plated or plastic covered.
Bumpers. Shall be of any suitable plastic material. The bumper shall have an appearance comparable to the seat. Two or more bumpers shall be securely attached to the underside of each seat and of other cover. Seats shall have 1/16 inch minimum clearance above the seat. Integrally molded bumpers shall be acceptable.
